This Interstate replaced US 80 as the main route to San Diego. It also replaced AZ 84 between Casa Grande and Gila Bend.

This is one of only three one-digit Interstate routes, the others being I-4 and I-5.

I-8 has Business Loops in Gila Bend and Yuma (both old US 80). The Yuma loop goes into California before rejoining I-8.

Arizona has been promoting I-8 and AZ 85 as a bypass of Phoenix, to reduce pollution and traffic congestion.

There is a "wrong way" segment east of Yuma where the westbound and eastbound lanes cross over each other. Telegraph Pass is the only mountainous section of I-8 in Arizona. The eastbound side is posted 45MPH for trucks, with a large "tipping truck" warning sign. This side was old US 80.

A few of the eastern I-8 exits have these style of signs, with the exit number on the top rather than next to the arrow.

Near the Mexican border, many signs are dual-posted in English and Spanish.

When passing through Dateland, be sure to stop at the diner and get a date milkshake.

Between exits 119 and 140 is the longest section of interstate in Arizona without an exit (21 miles). There are no services between Gila Bend and Casa Grande (60 miles).
